Joe West has always been the loving father to Iris, Barry, Wally, and Jenna as well as partner to Cecile. But, it is about time he gets a storyline of his own and  The Flash season 7 is going to give him a huge one.

Showrunner Eric Wallace has spoken to Entertainment Weekly‘s Chancellor Agard about what is next for the Flash family’s patriarch, Joe West in The Flash season 7.

While he did not go into vast amounts of detail, Wallace did say that Joe will be involved in a societal changes storyline come season 7. Here’s what he said:

"“Joe’s story line this season is inspired by the societal changes happening in today’s world. Because of everything we’re all waking up to each day in 2020, I felt there was a great opportunity here – even within our fantastical, family-oriented show – to comment indirectly on truths folks could easily recognize. And do so in an entertaining way.”"

Wallace also stressed that Joe will end up in a place that was never anticipated, even by him. He also points out that Joe has always had a huge heart and when faced with any kind kind of injustice, he never shies away from facing it full on.

The showrunner joined The Flash during season 4 before he was promoted to the position when season 6 went into production.

More from Arrowverse

Stepping away from Eric Wallace and Joe for a moment, the societal changes storyline isn’t the first time the Arrowverse has tackled social issues. Arrow delved into gun control during its fifth season, Black Lightning  tackled a storyline during its first three seasons on various issues including the Flint water crisis. Supergirl has dealt with transphobia as seen in an episode which aired earlier this year. The show’s forth season also dealt with xenophobia.

Having Joe West become involved in a societal changes storyline allows for him to evolve and grow outside of the paternal role he has played for the entirety of the show’s run thus far.
