Wonder Woman: Dead Earth

This book is probably the most different book out of anything on this list and, admittedly, is not for the faint of heart. As the title suggests, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth is a post-apocalyptic horror story with Diana as the focal point character. As grim as that sounds though, it is a grandiose love letter to Diana as a character from writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson.

By love letter this doesn’t mean that Diana is a perfect character with no imperfections. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. She’s emotionally and physically compromised throughout most of the miniseries and everything for her is a struggle. At the end of the day though, every action that she takes, whether it be an accomplishment or mistake, it feels like Diana. This is a story about Diana at her lowest point and climbing her way out of the metaphorical black hole she’s in so that she can become Wonder Woman once again.

This book is also a visual treat due to Johnson’s incredibly fantastic and stylized artwork. As emotionally-driven as the series is, it’s also incredibly violent. It’s not a fun violence either, like a lot of comics do, but rather a depressing violence. It’s something very subtle in the artwork that Johnson manages to do and he does it so incredibly.

At the end of the day though, this is a story about hope in even the most hopeless circumstances and what better character to embody that than Wonder Woman? And this is just the tip of the iceberg for great Wonder Woman stories from amazing writers and artists.

Gal Gadot returns as Diana Prince when Wonder Woman 1984 arrives in theaters.
