Watchmen makes history at the Emmy Awards 2020
HBO’s Watchmen made comic book history at the 2020 edition of the Emmy Awards and, quite frankly, it’s long overdue.
The Emmy Awards are undoubtedly one of the most anticipated nights in the TV calendar. This year, however, was undoubtedly one of the most unique offerings ever as the ceremony was done virtually instead (due to everything going on in the world). That didn’t stop Watchmen from making history at the event.
The HBO limited series was nominated for an incredible 26 awards before the ceremony and it ended up winning a lot of them before the telecast – including Outstanding Casting, Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes and Outstanding Music Composition For a Limited Series, Movie or Special.
Overall, Watchmen picked up an incredible 11 wins at the event, more than any other show. Regina King won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie while Jeremy Irons took home Outstanding Lead Actor. Both amazing and well-earned accomplishments and the still, the best was yet to come.

The icing on the cake was the fact that Watchmen also picked up the award for Outstanding Limited Series. Not only was this also incredibly well-earned, it was historic; marking the first time a comic book property won one of the top awards of the evening.
Award ceremonies are notorious for snubbing comic book films and TV shows when it comes to the major awards, so it was refreshing to see the HBO series pick up this win.
Naturally, the internet was abuzz with fans taking to social media to praise Watchmen‘s boldness and how it ultimately allowed it to break down barriers for a genre that is too often overlooked by award ceremonies.
The limited show was produced by Damon Lindelof and it was based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ 1986 DC Comics series. It’s not a direct adaptation but more of a “remix” and it received universal acclaim for the unapologetic and eye-opening way it tackled systematic racism in America.
