Say goodbye to the Girl of Steel. Trailblazing show Supergirl will be ending with its upcoming sixth season, scheduled for 2021.

The last daughter of Krypton is set to take flight one last time in 2021. Supergirl was the first The CWVerse/Arrowverse solo show headlined by a female hero, and she has laid the path for many more to come. Deadline reports that the show will conclude with a 20-episode sixth season.

Melissa Benoist, who plays title character Kara Danvers/ Supergirl, will need the help of all her Superfriends as she battles DC supervillain Lex Luthor and the ancient gods known as Leviathan.

Among its recurring cast, we can expect the return of Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor), Jesse Rath (Braniac-5), Nicole Maines (Nia Nal/ Dreamer), Azie Tesfai (Kelly Olsen), David Harewood (Martian Manhunter), and Jon Cryer (Lex Luthor).

Why is Supergirl Ending?

Supergirl has been known to struggle with its ratings, and production was also delayed due to the pandemic and Benoist’s pregnancy. According to Deadline, these are some of the reasons why the creators, producers and even Benoist herself have decided to end the show.

Thankfully the show will end on its own terms, rather than being cancelled. Supergirl has seemingly always lived on a cliff’s edge. Some of its storylines have undoubtedly been lacklustre and the characters have sometimes been underserved.

While many have argued against the show’s on-the-nose feminism and its many ‘agendas’, Supergirl has taken on relevant topics impacting people in the real world. From women’s issues to the plight of immigrants and hate crimes, the show has paved the way for the bold takes on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman.

Supergirl was one of the rare genre shows to have a main character come out as lesbian in her adulthood (Chyler Leigh’s Alex Danvers), and the first to feature a transgender actor and superhero in its cast (Nicole Maines’ Nia Nal/ Dreamer).

Speculation was rife that the release of Superman & Lois would spell the demise of Supergirl. That seems to have held true. One can only assume that the spin-off show will be courageous enough to carry on the legacy of its predecessor.

Benoist shared a fond farewell to her character and the impact the show has had on young girls. She also promised ‘one helluva sendoff’, which is the least The CW can offer the show’s fans.

Considering the number of fan-favourite characters that have appeared on the show, the showrunners would be wise to give them all a proper farewell. Or perhaps even transfer them to the other CWverse shows.
