Archie Andrews star KJ Apa has revealed how Riverdale season 5 will handle kissing scenes moving forward.

Riverdale season 5 – along with many of The CW’s TV shows – has resumed production in Vancouver, Canada.

The show, like the others, was forced to shut down production of its fourth season due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus back in March, resulting in season 4 being cut short. However, a few weeks back, the cast and crew returned to Vancouver and quarantined themselves for two weeks before returning to work.

Film and TV productions all over the world have been greatly affected by everything that is happening at the moment, with many ongoing soaps having to come up with innovative ways to allow its actors to film intimate moments and fight scenes.

It seems that The CW has put a number of precautions in place to ensure that Riverdale – as far as the finished product goes – won’t be affected.

Actor KJ Apa – who plays Archie Andrews on the show – posted a video of himself and co-star Camila Mendes – who portrays Veronica Lodge – on Instagram with the caption “our new normal is washing our mouths before every take of a make-out scene…”. See the post below:

In the clip, Apa and Mendes wash out their mouths for 30 seconds before spitting into a plastic bag which is then removed immediately. Fellow Riverdale star Lili Reinhart – who plays Betty Cooper – commented underneath the post and remarked how the mouth wash burned.

There was intrigue as to whether or not certain TV shows would be able to resume production as normal and what restrictions would be put in place for the foreseeable future. The CW has been following protocols in order to allow their offerings in Vancouver to resume.

Given the 14-day quarantine period and the fact that they’ll be isolating with each other all year round and now the mouth washing before kissing scenes, it’s clear that the network is taking every precaution to ensure the protection of its cast and crew and that season 5 of Riverdale, when it does arrive, will seem as normal as the previous seasons.

Riverdale  season 5 is expected to hit screens in January 2021.
