Supergirl Season 6: Six characters who should return for the final season
By Monita Mohan
1. James Olsen
Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen was a bold choice given that the character of Superman’s best friend and the Daily Planet’s greatest photographer has historically been illustrated as Caucasian. The furore surrounding Brooks’ casting wasn’t quite as vitriolic as that of many other black actors (think Michael B. Jordon as the Human Torch on Fant4stic or Anna Diop as Starfire on Titans), but the role was underserved from the get-go.
Introduced as a love interest for Kara Danvers, the writers struggled to give Olsen the direction and arcs he deserved. He went from heroic reporter to the superhero Guardian, to the head of CatCo, to Lena Luther’s love interest—Olsen’s character was everywhere but didn’t go anywhere.
Olsen’s meatiest arc came in Season 4 as he went head-to-head with Agent Liberty; he did so with his wits and his honour, instead of just his fists.
Brooks’ charisma held viewers’ interests, but it came as no surprise when he decided to exit the show early in Season 5. Olsen returned to his hometown to save it from remaining impoverished due to the emergence of a private prison.
Seeing the character return for one last hurrah, either as a photographer for the local newspaper he decided to revive in his hometown or as Guardian, will be a fitting finale for a beloved character.
Supergirl will return on The CW in 2021.
