She-Hulk: 4 things we must see from Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters in the MCU
By Mark Lynch
Why it’s different being She-Hulk
There are certain things that come with being a Hulk. The super strength and being nearly invulnerable are the positives. One of the negatives, however, is being in human form and having to change. This could leave you in awkward situations.
For Bruce, this hasn’t been an issue. He’s a guy with unlimited power. Who’s going to say anything to him if he’s caught exposed to the world? In Avengers No. 20, Jennifer explained how looking like her isn’t as easy as it seems.
Bruce once told Jennifer that he was envious of her because she could wear suits and look like a bodybuilder. She said she’s never wanted to punch her cousin so bad. She goes on to tell stories about how villains would cop a feel while they were fighting and people would take pictures of her if she ended up topless during a battle. The latter when she was a member of the Fantastic Four. She said that being a big scary monster didn’t sound so bad.
Jennifer Walters is correct. Being a woman and superhero isn’t the same as being a guy superhero – and the comics really highlighted that through her conversation with Bruce. If he gets big and green, people fear and even respect him, but for her, she’s objectified. That double standard is nothing short of terrible. Having the character highlight this in She-Hulk would be another way to showcase some of those disgusting double standards and how they still happen in real life.
