Newcomer Iman Vellani has been cast as the titular character in Disney Plus’ upcoming MCU series Ms. Marvel.

Disney Plus continues to move things forward for its exclusive line-up of Marvel Cinematic Universe shows. Fresh off casting Tatiana Maslany – and hiring a director and executive producer – for their upcoming She-Hulk TV series, the streamer has now found who is going to be leading the heavily-anticipated Ms. Marvel.

As revealed by Deadline, Marvel has cast newcomer Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel herself and her human alter-ego Kamala Khan.

Not much else has been revealed about the upcoming series at this point, though both Marvel Studios and Disney did recently hire Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Menon as directors on the show.

Ms. Marvel makes history

More from Disney Plus

The character of Kamala Khan made her debut in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 2013, first showing up in Captain Marvel No. 14. She then went on to headline her very own solo series – aptly titled Ms. Marvel – the following year, making her the very first Muslim character to star in a Marvel series.

The character is an huge fan of Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers, and after she discovers that she possesses Inhuman abilities takes over Danvers’ original mantle of Ms. Marvel – allowing the latter to take on the Captain Marvel mantle.

Danvers made history last year when the character headlined the Captain Marvel film (in which she was portrayed by Brie Larson) that ultimately grossed over $1 billion at the box office. Upon the announcement of a Ms. Marvel series, fans were excited at the prospect of seeing the two of them team up and still hope that it will happen at some point down the line.

You can rest assured that fans are eager to see Iman Vellani in action as the character!
