Carrying on Arrow’s legacy

When we say that Arrow started a universe, it really is no word of a lie. The show saw DC Comics’ Green Arrow, Oliver Queen, bring his dark brand of vengeance to Star City but it also launched a universe comprising of spin-offs The FlashSupergirl, DC’s Legends of TomorrowBlack LightningBatwomanStargirl and the soon-to-debut Superman & Lois.

While all of those owe their existence to Arrow, not all of them were created as Arrowverse properties. Crossovers and Crisis On Infinite Earths re-established some of them as such. That said, even the most-directly tied shows (The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow) only feature characters who debuted on Arrow before going on to enjoy much greater success in their own shows.

What makes Green Arrow and The Canaries different is that all three of these characters definitively belong to Arrow. Mia is Oliver’s daughter and the Green Arrow of the future, while Dinah is the second Black Canary to work alongside the Emerald Archer on Team Arrow over the show’s latter half. And then there’s Laurel – the formerly evil doppelganger of the original Black Canary who went on a compelling redemption arc and ultimately become arguably the best Canary on the show.

This spin-off would keep Arrow’s memory alive by giving the spotlight to three characters who were unique to that show. And this writer couldn’t think of a better tribute to the show that changed the face of superhero TV than that.
