With Stargirl season 2 having recently begun filming, two villains teased at the end of season 1 have been officially cast.

In an exclusive from Deadline, the casting of both Eclipso and The Shade in Stargirl season 2 have been revealed.

Taking on the role of Eclipso is Arrow alum Nick Tarabay and playing The Shade will be Jonathan Cake. Actress Ysa Penarejo has also been cast in the upcoming season of Stargirl, but no information about her character has been revealed beyond the fact that it will be an established DC Comics character.

Tarabay previously played Captain Boomerang for three episodes on Arrow and as also starred in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Pacific Rim: Uprising. As for Cake, he has also appeared in a CW DC show before as Blackbeard in two episodes of Legends of Tomorrow, but his most prominent role has been in the series, The Affair. Could we see a reference to the Arrowverse‘s multiverse now that Stargirl is somewhat canon?

Stargirl season 2’s new villains tease a new direction

For those familiar with either Eclipso or The Shade, the inclusion of both of these characters gives a heavy indication that season 2 of Stargirl is about to head into a much more mystical realm than the mostly sci-fi nature of the first season. For those who don’t know who Eclipso or The Shade are and are wondering how the show will become more mystical with these two, well, to put it simply, they are two incredibly powerful magical beings within the DC universe.

More from Arrowverse

The Shade is an immortal from the 19th century with powers over darkness and is often portrayed as an antihero, especially in the 1990s comic series of Starman. As for Eclipso, most of his appearances depict him as an evil god who exploits the flaws of those he interacts with, forcing them to turn against those around them, which he often enjoys with a sadistic glee.

As for Penarejo’s character though, that can only be speculated about at this time, but it’s possible she might be playing Jade, aka the daughter of Alan Scott, who was teased in the JSA headquarters in season 1. Alan Scott was the first Green Lantern and his powers differed from the modern Green Lantern characters in that they were mystic based (rather than space and sci-fi based). So, with a show based around legacy characters, it would make sense to introduce a mystically-based legacy in a season that seems to built heavily around mysticism.
