Batwoman season 2: First look at Javicia Leslie in the new costume

Ryan Wilder is the Scarlet Knight! We have our first look at Javicia Leslie in costume for Batwoman Season 2.

Gotham has a new protector looking out for her. Filming recently restarted on Batwoman Season 2 and following months of anticipation, Deadline has shared our first complete look at Javicia Leslie in costume as the titular hero of the Arrowverse show.

Leslie had hinted at her new look following DC FanDome, and DC Publisher Jim Lee had also included Leslie’s Ryan Wilder in his DC mural, but this is the first time the actor has been seen in full Batwoman regalia.

With Ruby Rose’s exit as Kate Kane—the original Batwoman—Leslie steps in as the new protagonist of the show. Leslie’s Wilder is the first Black female superhero to lead a solo The CWVerse/Arrowverse series. Leslie is also a bisexual actor representing the LGBTQIA+ community with her character.

Batwoman season 2: What’s new about the suit?

At DC FanDome, Leslie had stated that Ryan Wilder’s look would highlight that she is a Black woman with textured, natural hair, and the designers have come through on that promise. The suit has been designed by costume designer Maya Mani, and created by Ocean Drive Leather, with a wig by Janice Workman.

The suit itself, looks surprisingly similar to that of Kate Kane’s, with some significant changes. There are more red features with red gauntlets, a brighter red cape, and highlights in Wilder’s hair. The cowl has also been modified to silhouette Wilder’s afro. There will be no doubt in Gothamite’s minds that this hero is a Black woman.

It is likely that Wilder will initially adopt Kate Kane’s costume, before modifying it to her needs. Kate went down the same route in the first season of Batwoman. She originally began fighting crime in Batman’s suit, before stepping out of the shadows to reveal herself as Gotham’s Scarlet Knight.

Though fans will need to wait till 2021 to see Ryan Wilder on screen, the character is making her comic book debut on Batgirl #50.

Batwoman season 2 will find the main characters wrestling with their emotions over Kate Kane’s disappearance, while Alice faces a villain from her past.

Batwoman season 2 is set to air on The CW in 2021.
