The Crow

The ’90s saw the comic book movie genre slowly creep its way into mainstream Hollywood culture, thanks in part to Tim Burton’s big-budget hit 1989 adaptation of Batman. After more or less neglecting the genre for so long, Tinseltown had a lot of catching up to do.

Director Alex Proyas and Miramax Studios looked towards Image Comics to provide a different, darker kind of superhero story than what was coming out at the time. What we got was an adaptation of James O’Barr’s The Crow, all about Eric Draven – a man murdered with his fiancée days before their wedding – as he comes back from the dead seeking revenge.

Brandon Lee’s tragic accidental death understandably overshadowed the movie itself, but The Crow was praised for its stylistic visuals and for being a strong adaptation of its source material. Lee delivered what would have been a tremendous breakout performance and the film delivers a moody atmosphere and stylish neo-noir presentation that leaves an impression.

Blade

Blade has often been cited as the first Marvel character adapted for the big screen and while that isn’t quite true, the fact that it was one of the first big-budget Hollywood Marvel adaptations solidifies an argument for it being the first to pique Marvel’s interest in making big screen flicks and for what we know now as the MCU blockbuster.

Semantics aside, Blade serves as a solid time capsule in that regard but also serves as a solid film thanks to horror visuals, a cool and collected performance from Wesley Snipes, a delightfully deranged performance from Stephen Dorff, and some exciting action scenes.
