5 horror comic books screaming for the screen

Which comic books can follow in the footsteps of The Walking Dead and become the the next great horror film or TV series?
It’s that time of the year when we all steer towards the spooky end of our film and television library. With The Walking Dead reaching the milestone of 10 years on TV there is a thirst for more monstrous comic-inspired mayhem.
In the spirit of Halloween, here are five horror comic series that are ready to grab the torch lit by Rick Grimes in 2010.
Wytches by Scott Snyder
“Pledged is pledged.”
Wytches tells the story of the Rooks family after they move to a new town due to an incident between the daughter, Sailor, and her high school bully who went missing. Sailor is haunted by the rumors about her role in the bully’s disappearance and a fresh start seems impossible to come by.
Little do the Rooks know this New Hampshire town they are moving to is home to — you guessed it — dark secrets. Sailor and her writer father, Charlie, encounter ghastly creatures from the nearby woods.
The town has a history of locals sacrificing loved ones to the creatures known as wytches. The wytches offer promise to those who are willing to “pledge” one of their loved ones to them. Once pledged, the wytches will stop at nothing to come for you.
But who pledged Sailor? The mystery of that question carries you through a gamut of surprises and terror.
When it comes to modern horror in comics, few are in the class of Wytches. A film or limited series would be the best fit for this tale. It fits the mold of films like Nightbreed where the true monsters don’t always have razor-sharp teeth and claws.
Writer Scott Snyder confirmed earlier this year to Comic Book Resource that Wytches is in development for film.
