After bringing together the Justice Society in season 1, it looks like more are being added to their ranks going into Stargirl season 2.

In a report from Entertainment Weekly, Jim Gaffigan has been cast as Thunderbolt in Stargirl season 2.

According to EW, Thunderbolt will be a CGI character and Gaffigan will be providing the voice for it. While this casting announcement makes it clear that we will be seeing a full appearance of Thunderbolt in season 2 of Stargirl, the character was set up in season 1 in the form of a pink pen that Courtney took from the original JSA’s headquarters.

Who is Thunderbolt and how could he play into Stargirl season 2?

For those who don’t know who Thunderbolt is, that’s completely understandable as it is a relatively obscure character. Thunderbolt is a fifth-dimensional genie, whose real name is Yz, who lives in the ink of the pink pen that was hinted at in the first season of Stargirl.

Originally a member of the JSA with his “master” and friend Johnny Thunder, over the years, Johnny eventually develops Alzheimer’s and loses track of the pen in which Thunderbolt resides. The pen makes its way into the possession of a young kid named Jakeem, someone who was also name-dropped by Mike in season 1, who takes on Johnny’s legacy and goes by the moniker of Jakeem Thunder.

This latest casting comes just a little while after the castings of Eclipso and The Shade were reported and continues the trend of Stargirl casting seasoned actors and performers in key roles, such as Luke Wilson and Joel McHale.

With Gaffigan’s casting as Thunderbolt, it will be no surprise if it’s reported on who is playing Jakeem, and possibly Johnny, before season 2 premieres. As it stands now though, Stargirl season 2 looks to be going all in on mystical elements, which will hopefully be a lot of fun.
