Black Lightning will end after this upcoming season.

The CW has made a lot of noise with its DC Comics Arrowverse programming. Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and The Flash have been incredibly popular shows for the TV network and it only makes sense that they’d continue to add more shows based on DC Comics’ characters. In 2015, the network took on Supergirl from CBS and then, Black Lightning premiered in 2018 producing three seasons in two years.

Black Lightning was very well-received by critics and the impressive part is that it continued to get better after each episode. As good as the program was, Variety.com reports that Black Lightning will be entering its final season in 2021.

Black Lightning season 4 will be the show’s last

It would be nice to say that this news is shocking, but it isn’t. With the announcement of Painkiller’s possible spin-off, the showrunners and creators may have seen the writing on the wall. After hearing the cancelation rumblings, maybe they were looking for a way to continue Black Lightning‘s legacy on The CW, or maybe they wanted to end it on a high and carry on its legacy through a successor.

Personally, the show’s impending culmination still comes as a shock to this writer. It was praised by critics and adored by fans on social media. However, Black Lightning may end with season 4, but there are some positives that may come out of this.

We’ve seen plenty of shows go on too long. TV shows grow stale and can sometimes ruin what was once a great product. Dexter is a perfect example of this (the fact that it’s coming back is still befuddling).  Shows like The Good Place did it right – get in, get out, and leave us with an unforgettable series finale.

Black Lightning has the opportunity to do the same. The series can end on a high note and produce an incredible finale. It sounds bittersweet, but it’s something fans can look forward to. Another thing to be hopeful for is more China Anne McClain. And on that note, even though Painkiller could possibly get a show, Jennifer Pierce is the spin-off we deserve.

Jennifer Pierce has been the best character on the show. No one has grown more, had more emotional moments, or been a bigger part of the series than her. In fact, if it wasn’t for her, Painkiller probably wouldn’t be getting a spin-off. She helped make his character what it is. Painkiller can be interesting and Jordan Calloway has shown how great a performer he is. However, China Anne McClain has also shown that she has all the talent, charisma, and ability to lead. Hopefully, we will get more of her after Black Lightning ends.

Why Black Lightning was a trailblazer

This writer can go on and on about the positives that may come out of it, but Black Lightning coming to an end is sad. There aren’t a lot of black superheroes leading the way on TV. Thankfully, there’s Javicia Leslie who will be the new Scarlet Knight on Batwoman. Representation is important. It shows people that there is a chance for them to be in the roles they aspire to be in. It also projects more than just one side of a story. If everyone looked and acted the same, things would be boring. Seeing different races, creeds, and sexes educates people on things that people may not know.

Black Lightning may end, but it left a gift. For four seasons, a positive black family helped save their city and the universe. The show was unapologetic in its message and will inspire future creators to be positive and fight for what’s right. For that, this writer will always be thankful.
