The first reactions to Wonder Woman 1984 are rolling in. Has the movie managed to live up to its predecessor?

Wonder Woman 1984 may just be this year’s most anticipated release. Granted, there hasn’t been a lot of competition for that title due to the closure of theaters and the delays of some of the tentpole releases, but we’re all craving the hope that Diana Prince brings with her.

The upcoming sequel has arguably far more to live up to than any of the recent DCEU releases. 2017’s Wonder Woman was a resounding success, setting a remarkably high standard for modern superhero movies and paving the way for more female-led releases. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why fans are so eager for the follow-up.

They’re also eager to hear what people think of the movie. Though the official review embargo isn’t up until December 15, the social media embargo lifted on the 5th, meaning that members of the press who have already seen Wonder Woman 1984 can share their initial thoughts on it.

What are the critics saying about Wonder Woman 1984?

From the initial tweets that are making their way onto social media, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the response to Wonder Woman 1984 is overwhelmingly positive.

Many have pointed out that the sequel maintains that uplifting sense of hope that Diana is renowned for (which served as a solid foundation for the first movie) – something that Nerdist’s Amy Ratcliffe tweeted about while remarking that it’s nothing like modern superhero films:

Fandango’s Erik Davis echoed these sentiments, reflecting on how it complements the first film and calling it one of the best ever DC sequels:

IGN’s Terri Schwartz was also full of praise, teasing a beautiful human story for Gal Gadot’s Diana:

Of course, things could all change when the full reviews come out in the coming weeks, but it does seem like Wonder Woman 1984 has managed to ensure that DC’s Amazonian Princess will be remaining atop the DCEU for some time to come.
