HBO Max is set to add even more DC Comics content with an unexpected twist
HBO Max’s Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys has revealed some very exciting news for WarnerMedia’s streaming service in regards to original DC Comics content.
In a huge swerve, Warner Bros. Pictures did the unthinkable last week and announced that their entire 2021 film slate will be available on HBO Max for the first month of each film’s theatrical release, meaning that superhero flicks Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad can be viewed from the comfort of your own home (in the U.S., that is) whenever they are released in theaters.
That’s not the only exciting news for fans of HBO Max and DC Comics, however. Soon after this unprecedented move, Chief Creative Officer of HBO and its streamer HBO Max Casey Bloys revealed (as per Deadline) that discussions are being had to produce original DC-related content outside of the United States.
The CCO of the platform stated:
"“We’re also going to work to see DC content in other countries outside of the US… One of the big themes of bringing HBO Max together was breaking down the silos between HBO, Warner Bros. and TBS and TNT. I’d say one other silo was international.”"
As Deadline discusses, HBO has produced original series in territories such as Europe, Latin America and Asia. Some of the content includes The Pact, Game of Thrones and The Teenage Psychic.
What DC TV shows are currently on or coming to HBO Max?
HBO Max recently acquired DC Universe originals Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn, Titans, and Young Justice: Outsiders – all of which are indeed rolling over to the service for new seasons – and it also houses the first seasons of the short-lived Swamp Thing and what is now The CW’s Stargirl. However, it appears that library will be growing on an international scale.

- 7 actors who could replace Ezra Miller as The Flash in the DC Universe
- Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will have a battle pass (and that’s a bad sign)
- Harley Quinn renewed for a fifth season on Max (and it’s well-deserved)

Aside from Gunn’s Suicide Squad spin-off series Peacemaker and the Matt Reeves-helmed The Batman prequel drama series (influenced by Ed Brubaker’s and Greg Ruka’s Gotham Central), the potential of more DC content is quite literally endless, so the idea of seeing more localized original content produced internationally is very exciting.
