Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s Eisner winning comic Y: The Last Man is finally coming to television after more than a decade of setbacks.

After a long wait, Y: The Last Man is finally coming to our TV screens next year. A pilot episode of the post-apocalyptic, sci-fi adventure adaptation of the Vertigo comic is expected to stream on FX on Hulu in 2021.

A teaser image and the series’ logo were unveiled at Disney Investor Day last week. The still features a cloaked and masked Yorick Brown, played by Ben Schnetzer (Warcraft), surrounded by corpses presumably on the streets of Washington D.C. Yorick and his helper monkey in training Ampersand are the only two males to survive a catastrophic event.

A show that will subvert expectations

The biggest name attached to the series is Diane Lane, who is set to play Yorick’s mother, U.S. Representative Jennifer Brown. Lane is no stranger to playing a motherly role in a comic adaptation (she does, after all, play Martha Kent in the DCEU), but Jennifer Brown isn’t one to be rescued by her son. She takes on the task of reestablishing the government after the American patriarchy becomes extinct in the blink of an eye.

In fact, a theme in Y: The Last Man is flipping traditional gender dynamics seen in comics and society on their heads. While Yorick is the “Last Man,” he is far from the traditional comic book hero. He’s not particularly strong, his bravery is rooted in foolishness and his greatest survival skill is his ability as an escape artist. A street magician by trade, Yorick’s sleight of hand and expertise with locksmithing actually come in handy quite often.

Y: The Last Man is full of badass characters

Meanwhile, the post-patriarchal world of Y is filled with strong, brave female characters. Perhaps the strongest, Agent 355 played by Ashley Romans, will be the biggest badass on the show from the jump. Agent 355 is part of a secret sect of government intelligence known as the Culper Ring. The Culper Ring was a very real thing and was the first American spy unit established during the Revolutionary War. In Y: The Last Man the Culper Ring still operates in the shadows and Agent 355 is one of its best operatives. Romans played FBI agent Tabitha Hutter on AMC’s NOS4A2 and will be right at home tossing baddies around.

More from TV

The pilot for Y: The Last Man is directed by Louise Friedberg and has a 60-minute runtime according to IMBD. Vaughan and Guerra are onboard as producers. The cast includes Olivia Thirlby (Dredd, Juno) as Yorick’s sister Hero Brown, Rona-Lee Shim’on as Israeli commando Alter and Julianna Canfield (Succession) as Yorick’s girlfriend Beth. There are still several key characters whose castings have not been confirmed.

No definitive release date for the pilot has been announced and it is unclear if the series will be picked up, but it wouldn’t be Vaughan’s first comic series to make it to TV. He also created Marvel’s Runaways for Hulu.

The series has undergone several changes just in the last year, including several stars such as Imogen Poots and Barry Koeghan, as well as its showrunners Michael Green and Aida Mashaka Croal.
