1. Rorschach by Tom King & Jorge Fornés

There are very few books that utterly grip you with only three issues in the way that Rorschach by Tom King & Jorge Fornés has been able to do. This sequel to HBO’s Watchmen series follows a detective after he is hired by a prospective President to track down the origins of a new Rorschach and his partner, The Kid, after the duo attempted to assassinate this prospective President.

Only three issues in, but every single page is captivating. An angry look at modern day politics without ever explicitly stating that is unafraid of diving into uncomfortable topics. In fact, the most recent issue was one of the best commentaries in comics regarding conspiracy theories and false notions that begin to pervade society after large-scale disasters occur. It’s haunting, truly emphasizing horrific natures that permeate throughout society.

This is also another entry on this list for artist Jorge Fornés who is creating some of the best work of his career on this series. The artwork is somehow minimalist, yet extremely detailed in a way that evokes one of the best comics artists ever, David Mazzuchelli. Fornés accentuates King’s dialogue in all the right places and elevates it beyond what it could ever just be on the page by itself.
