9. Strange Adventures by Tom King, Mitch Gerads, & Evan Shaner

What is truth? What is fiction? When do they become the same thing? When one acts out of belief that what he thinks is the truth does fiction actually exist? That’s the central conceit of Strange Adventures by writer Tom King and artists Mitch Gerads & Evan Shaner. Just by its title, you wouldn’t think that this is what this Adam & Alanna Strange and Mr. Terrific starring series would be about, but it absolutely is. It’s a war story wrapped in a hard-boiled detective story and it really dives into the heart of each of these characters. Every issue is an enthralling read and really dives head-first into these characters’ lives and struggles. It will also make you unabashedly fall in love with Mr. Terrific and Alanna Strange by the end of issue 3.

What makes this series so different from other comics on the shelves right now is the dual art team of Gerads and Shaner. They have vastly different styles, but how Strange Adventures uses them, they work in tandem so well. Gerads’ gritty style works incredibly well with the detective story being told within the present framework used in the series, while Shaner’s very clean, classic style works best for the past timeline. Both bring their absolute A-game to this series, making for one of one of the best looking books of the year.
