8. The Mutant Space program

Comic book: S.W.O.R.D. No. 1

Mutants have had a big couple of years. They have a nation acknowledged by the U.N., discovered a way to cheat death, and survived their first big war (X of Swords). Now, they’re making advancements in space travel. Krakoa has a space program called S.W.O.R.D. That name may sound familiar because S.W.O.R.D. was once a division used to defend against intergalactic terrorism led by Abigail Brand. After leaving Alpha Flight, Brand is now back with S.W.O.R.D. and it’s run by mutants.

Why is this important?

During Empyre: Aftermath Avengers Issue No. 1, Abigail Brand slapped Carol Danvers for being irresponsible. Brand said that she should have been informed about the Cotati the second Carol found out about them. She quit Alpha Flight and said she has better things to do with her time. We later see a future where Brand returns while Hulkling and his people lay bloody and defeated saying that she should have listened.

It’s easy to think that Brand and her people caused the destruction. Realistically, they’re probably there to help. An alien threat of any kind is a problem. Brand isn’t going to hold a grudge because she was right. Now, we have to wonder and hope the mutants are helping as well.
