According to a new report, Jodie Whittaker is set to depart BBC’s Doctor Who series in the near-future, but is there any truth to these claims?

Jodie Whittaker made headlines when she became the first woman to portray the legendary Doctor in BBC’s long-running TV drama Doctor Who. A long overdue and monumental moment, she instantly made the role her own as the show took everyone’s favorite time-traveling Time Lord into an exciting new era.

However, according to a new report, that exciting new era could be about to come to an end.

Is Jodie Whittaker leaving Doctor Who?

According to The Mirror, Jodie Whittaker is planning to leave Doctor Who when the show concludes its next series when the character will reportedly “regenerate into the fourteenth Time Lord”. The 13th season of the revived show, it is expected to air on screens in the fall of 2021.

It’s worth noting that this report has yet to actually be confirmed by the BBC, who released a statement to Digital Spy in response to the Doctor Who news in which they made clear that they would not comment “on any speculation around Jodie’s future on the show.”

Why is Jodie Whittaker leaving Doctor Who?

Though it has yet to be confirmed whether or not Jodie Whittaker is actually leaving Doctor Who,  The Mirror reports that she intends on sticking to the show’s traditional rule of having the current Doctor depart after three seasons and that the show is already preparing to orchestrate the next regeneration at the end of the series.

With that in mind, it wouldn’t be too out-there to believe that Whittaker intends to follow suit, following in the footsteps of David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi in exiting and leaving the audience wanting more.

Who will replace Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who?

If the rumors are true and Whittaker intends to depart the show, the BBC will need to find a new actor to play the role. Of course, fans will undoubtedly be wondering if the next Doctor would still be female or if they will change back to a male protagonist.

If it is indeed the former, one name fans would love to see play the role would be Agent Carter‘s Hayley Atwell – who was a fan-favorite choice to play the character when the initial announcement was made.

The truth is that nobody knows what awaits for this series of Doctor Who and indeed who will play the alien Time Lord in the future because, until any of this is confirmed, it will remain a rumor.
