Veteran actress Sally Field took over from the much-loved Rosemary Harris in the role of Aunt May in Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man reboot series.

Aunt May is very much like The Flash’s Nora Allen. She is a crucial part of Peter’s development before and after he lived by his late Uncle Ben’s wise and popular responsibility advice. She is a very prominent character in the comics and usually nurtures the relatable superhero, being influential and somewhat key in most adaptations.

Following Uncle Ben’s murder in The Amazing Spider-Man series, this version of Aunt May unfortunately only served the bare minimum of what had been required of her. She was overlooked in the character department, but despite this, she did make quite an impact – especially during the second chapter of Webb’s saga.

Aunt May was as much a part of Peter’s journey as Gwen Stacy was but in a slightly more cryptic way that was never fully resolved. The film’s “Untold Story” involved Peter’s biological parents and it was later revealed that it also involved Aunt May – as she told Peter about a withheld secret which crushed his views, initially about his father and even led him to face at least one of his enemies and uncover the truth.

This Aunt May’s potential was only ever teased. Wouldn’t it be nice to see her return in Spider-Man 3 just to have her storyline tied up?
