Another villain is coming to Gotham in Batwoman season 2 and he’s a bit of a familiar face in the DC universe and media landscape.

In an exclusive from Entertainment Weekly, it has been revealed by Batwoman showrunner, Caroline Dries, that the Arrowverse show will include a second big bad in the second season. In addition to the previously announced Safiyah, Black Mask (along with his False Face Society) will be the second big bad of the season.

According to Dries, he won’t be appearing until later on in the season, whereas Safiyah will be the focus early on. Also, according to Dries, Ryan Wilder has a vendetta against the False Face Society due to their peddling of drugs in Gotham, which is the reason that Ryan ended up in prison for a time. No casting for who will be playing Black Mask has been announced yet.

Before he appears on Batwoman season 2, who is Black Mask?

For those who don’t know who Black Mask is, simply put, he’s a Gotham mobster whose real name is Roman Sionis and is almost an inversion of Bruce Wayne.

Born to socialite parents who consistently neglected him, he eventually killed his parents and bankrupted their company Janus Cosmetics, which is what eventually led him to the organized crime life and his creation of the False Face Society. This new gang eventually let him become one of the most prominent mobsters in Gotham City.

The character of Black Mask appeared most recently in last year’s Birds of Prey, played by Ewan McGregor, and has also appeared in Batman: Under the Red Hood, as well as the Batman: Arkham video game series. His appearance on Batwoman will mark the character’s second live-action appearance and first live-action television appearance.

Batwoman season 2 premieres on The CW on Sunday, January 17, 2021 and will pass the torch from Kate Kane to Ryan Wilder.
