WandaVision features some vintage commercials that make reference to the MCU but they have a much greater meaning.

WandaVision made its debut on Disney Plus and it already has the world talking about it. The first property in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fourth phase, the miniseries saw Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) together again inside what appears to be a sitcom that belongs to the television world of the ’50s or the ’60s.

Now a married couple with secrets (much like the great Samantha and Darrin Stephens of Bewitched), Wanda and Vision formed a new life for themselves in domestic bliss. However, not everything worked out like they expected it to.

Like television of days-gone-by, WandaVision was temporarily interrupted by some vintage commercials. These commercials, however, made reference to the wider MCU. Easter Eggs are common practice in comic book properties and Marvel knows how to make them count. However, these references are far more than just Easter Eggs.

What do the Stark and Strucker commercials mean in WandaVision?

There are two commercials across the double premiere of WandaVision with one taking place in each episode. The first advertises a classic Stark toaster, while the other showcases a Strucker watch (with the word HYDRA on it, would you believe). These are clear references to MCU characters Tony Stark and Baron Strucker but they also have a much more personal meaning to one of the titular characters.

Wanda and her twin brother Pietro Maximoff’s parents were killed in a bombing that featured Stark weapons. This ultimately led the pair to HYDRA leader Baron Wolfgang von Strucker – who ended up experimenting on the pair and gave them their powers, turning Pietro into Quicksilver and Wanda into the Scarlet Witch.

Of course, Stark also holds another level of importance to both Wanda and Vision as Tony/Iron Man was one of their colleagues on the Avengers and it was he who ultimately created Vision.

It seems that the commercials are references to Wanda’s past. As a result, each one may offer a new consecutive reference to her story. So far, we have had references to her tragic origins and her alliance with HYDRA. Could we see a nod to her becoming an Avenger next?

Either way, this definitely suggests that the fan theories are correct and that Wanda is indeed behind the Bewitched-like life that she and Vision are living right now.
