The man behind Moon Knight’s primary antagonist has been unveiled.

As reported by The Hollywood ReporterBoyhood actor/writer, Ethan Hawke, has signed on to play the main villain in the Disney+ Moon Knight series opposite the lead Oscar Issac.

Developed and adapted as a six-episode web-television series by showrunner Jeremy Slater, Moon Knight is set to feature a complex, white-garbed vigilante of the same name suffering from dissociative identity disorder. That vigilante is based on the Marvel character created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin. Also handling writing duties with head writer Slater is The Witcher’s Beau DeMayo.

The series will center on Marc Spector (Issac), as we dig inside the psyche of the ex-CIA agent-turned-mercenary who has multiple identities (Jake Lockley, Steven Grant and Moon Knight) that lie dormant within his mind and who appear against the backdrop of Egyptian iconography.

The cast and crew of the series is beginning to fill out as May Calamawy of Hulu’s comedy-drama series Ramy has just been cast in an undisclosed role. This also comes after it was announced genre filmmaking duo, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead will join Mohammed Diab as directors for remaining episodes of the series.

Who is Ethan Hawke playing in Moon Knight?

It is not yet known which character Hawke could play, but Moon Knight has several recurring villains, including but not limited to his earliest foe and archnemesis Bushman. Insider Daniel Richtman has claimed that Bushman may appear but was not specific as to if he will be the main antagonist.

In a career spanning decades, Hawke has never appeared in a comic book genre movie, though he did manage to thrive in the horror genre with the Sinister and The Purge franchises. The two-time Oscar nominee also has written two romantic dramas in the Before trilogy: 1995’s Before Sunrise and 2013’s Before Midnight.

Moon Knight is set to shoot in Budapest this March and set for a 2022 release.
