1. The Batman Who Laughs

Comic Book: Dark Nights: MetalDark Nights: Death Metal

On the opposite side of Superman’s hope, we have Batman – a hero who operates by lurking in the shadows and putting fear into everyone. Batman is dreaded by villains and heroes alike and he likes it that way. Sometimes his lone wolf shtick gets him in trouble – like how in JLA: Tower of Babel, Batman’s contingency plan in case the Justice League turned evil was enacted by a villain. This justified the League’s concerns with The Dark Knight as they worried that he was too concerned about “what if” and that may lead him to go too far. Well, those worries may have been right – and that’s showcased in the evil Bruce Wayne in The Batman Who Laughs.

In that universe, Batman killed The Joker. When The Joker’s heart stopped beating, it let out a toxin that gave Batman his killer personality, resulting in him killing his family (except Damian who went along with it) and the Justice League. The Batman Who Laughs was officially born.

The phrase, “He’ll win because he’s Batman” was never more appropriate. He destroyed everyone who went against him. Everyone in the world was just a plaything to him – or, as he put it, “They were all problems to solve.” The Batman Who Laughs is eventually killed by Wonder Woman but not before almost taking the entire DC Comics multiverse with him.

He truly could have been the scariest DC Comics being in existence.
