WandaVision teases that Wanda is capable of becoming the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next big bad.

Marvel Studios put themselves in a difficult position with Thanos. The Mad Titan was arguably the toughest villain in comic book movie history. No one has ever defeated the heroes like he did. Even after death, the legend of Thanos can’t be snapped away. But what comes next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

The next overarching MCU villain, at the very least, has to be just as good. It also has to be someone that can measure up with the incredibly powerful Captain Marvel. You can’t throw just anyone at her – she’ll flat out embarrass them. Remember, she almost beat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

Whoever’s up next has to be able to challenge Captain Marvel and measure up to Thanos’ legacy. With that, it would make sense that Wanda Maximoff is the next big bad – something that WandaVision has showcased she is capable of becoming.

Each episode of WandaVision has shown – or at least alluded to – Wanda doing amazing things. If the theories are true about the reality she and Vision are living in, we have seen that her powers are indeed able to alter reality.

In the third episode of the Disney Plus series, Wanda showed a side to her we hadn’t seen before. When Vision started to realize things were off in Westview, Wanda seemingly altered reality so that she’d get a different version of events. She made Vision’s opinion on what was happening more favorable to her. Furthermore, at the end of the episode, she seemingly threw Geraldine (Monica Rambeua) out of her world.

These are not the actions of a hero. Episode 3 gave us confirmation that Wanda isn’t the happy go-lucky and all-round good and light-hearted person that she appears to be in this alt-reality WandaVision has given us.

We could tell that she wasn’t like herself and viewers have now assumed that she was having a difficult time losing everything she cared about: Her home and community was destroyed, her brother was killed by Ultron, the love of her life was murdered, and Thanos dusted her away. That’s enough to drive anyone crazy. Nonetheless, her actions in episode three of WandaVision essentially confirm that she created this world for selfish reasons. It also displayed a level of power we couldn’t wait to see from the MCU version of the character.

Is Wanda the MCU’s next villain and can she challenge Captain Marvel?

In Avengers: Endgame Wanda was the first person to really scare Thanos. She used her telekinetic abilities to rip Thanos’ armor off and hold him in place. At first, it seemed like she was struggling but as quickly as she struggled, she got a hang of it. And, with ease, she had him beaten. If not for the giant ship “raining fire” she would have killed him.

Let’s add that kind of telekinetic mastery and strength to her incredible reality-altering powers and Captain Marvel would have a legit fight on her hands. Add Carol knowing that Wanda is a good person at heart and she would undoubtedly have to hold back in said fight – another obstacle in her way. You can’t hold back fighting the Scarlet Witch. Wanda certainly won’t.

More from Disney Plus

We know that Wanda will have a big part in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. What we don’t know is how the movie will end. We can make the assumption that Doctor Strange will help Wanda control her powers or defeat her. However, that’s just an assumption. Wanda is more powerful than a lot of people realize. More than even she knows.

In House of M, she recreated her entire reality. Who’s to say she won’t do it here? This kind of power and her desire to hold onto her happy life could make her do dangerous things. If and when this happens, the Avengers will have to step in and stop her. When they do, there will be consequences. It could be the distraction the Skrulls need to step in and start their invasion. She could change the world and cause ripples across the multiverse and who knows what else.

Regardless, Wanda Maximoff could be the big villain that reunites the Avengers. Let’s see if they can beat someone with a power level they didn’t even know existed.
