Another fan-favorite comic book character is joining Titans season 3.

Looks like Titans season 3 is going to be packed with favorites from the comic books. After it was announced that Commissioner Barbara Gordon had been cast for the show, Variety has revealed a surprising new addition to the roster — Tim Drake will be a recurring character when the show returns for its third installment.

Jay Lycurgo (who will also be starring in Matt Reeves’ The Batman) will be playing the role of the genius-minded youngster.

Lycurgo’s Tim Drake is the latest in a long line of Bat-Universe characters making their live-action debut on the HBO Max (and former DC Universe) show. He follows Nightwing, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, and Robin/Red Hood.

Will Titans season 3 give fans a new Robin?

According to the Variety report, Tim Drake on Titans will have “grown up on the toughest streets”, which is what makes him street smart.

In the comics, Tim Drake was introduced following the death of Jason Todd, aka Robin 2.0. Tim had deduced Batman and Robin’s identities and showed up at Wayne Manor declaring himself the new Robin because Batman couldn’t function without one. Dick Grayson had previously turned down Tim’s offer to take on his old mantle, leaving Tim with no other option than to become Robin himself.

Tim’s been a part of DC Comics ever since, leading the Titans in several runs and taking on the moniker of Red Robin after being replaced by Batman’s son, Damian, as Robin. Tim was briefly killed off during the Rebirth run, but that was temporary. He is now back and going by the code name Drake.

More from DC Universe

We already know that in Titans season 3, Jason Todd, the current Robin, will be transforming into his much-loved anti-hero persona, Red Hood. This will leave a Robin-shaped hole in Batman’s life. What we don’t know yet is whether Tim Drake will be introduced as the Caped Crusader’s new sidekick, or he will eventually evolve into one.

In his tweet about the role, Jay Lycurgo described his character as “the best detective in Gotham”, which may mean that the character will be lurking in the Titans’ periphery, trying to figure out their identities. He’s probably going to be a thorn in their side, but we will have to wait and see how Tim’s characterization is adapted for the show.

The third season will be the show’s first foray into Gotham. We had seen a version of the fictional city in the Season 1 finale, but the verisimilitude to the real Gotham is questionable considering it was all in Dick Grayson’s head, and he was being controlled by Trigon at the time.

While there’s always a concern that Titans has an over-bloated cast of characters, Gotham wouldn’t feel right without its most popular people living in it.

Titans season 3 will be streaming on HBO Max.
