By Monita Mohan
Black Panther director, Ryan Coogler, has inked a 5-year deal with Disney Plus, revealing that we’ll see a Marvel’s Black Panther-inspired Wakanda series on the streaming service.
There is more Black Panther content coming for fans. According to Deadline, the franchise’s director, Ryan Coogler, has inked a new deal with The Walt Disney Company that extends his contract with them for five years, also revealing that Coogler’s production company Proximity Media will be developing a Wakanda television series for the Disney Plus streaming platform.
Coogler runs Proximity Media alongside Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Ludwig Göransson, Archie Davis, and Peter Nicks.
Following the sudden passing of T’Challa actor Chadwick Boseman in 2020, Marvel has revealed that T’Challa will not be recast in the sequel. Instead, the film will be going in a different direction. Coogler directed the first Black Panther film in 2018 and is already working on re-writing his script for the much-anticipated sequel. He is set to begin directing the film this year.
With this new deal, Coogler and his team will have the opportunity to explore other aspects of Wakandan life.
What could the Disney Plus Black Panther show be about?
The first show that Coogler will be creating for Disney Plus will be set in Wakanda. The report doesn’t specify what the spin-off will be about or who the show will feature. Deadline specifies that this will be a drama, which leaves the door open for a multitude of storylines, especially since Black Panther has a cast full of intriguing characters.
Given the popularity of the Dora Milaje among comic book fans and the film’s fans, it’s possible that the show could focus on members of the royal guard, borrowing heavily from Ta-Nehisi Coates’ exceptional comic run about the characters.

Alternatively, we could explore the lives of Okoye (Danai Gurira) and W’Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya), or the rise of young King T’Chaka and his family. Perhaps, Coogler can also give us a spy thriller featuring Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia.
All this would also give Marvel fans some well-deserved content centering on Black women.
Coogler was quoted as already being ‘in the mix’ of proposing new Marvel Cinematic Universe shows — all of which means the MCU is finally going to expand the kind of representation we’ve seen on-screen for over a decade.
Coogler’s team will also be working on creating content for other divisions of the Walt Disney Company.
