WandaVision episode 5 explained: Why Monica Rambeau is angry with Captain Marvel
Episode 5 of WandaVision featured another reference to Carol Danvers but why did Monica Rambeau react with contempt to Captain Marvel’s name? Spoilers for WandaVision season 1, episode 5 follow.
WandaVision wasted little time tying itself to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Disney Plus show has been running for nearly a month now and it has already featured an abundance of references to the MCU movie franchise.
With Wanda and Vision attempting to live in sitcom bliss in Westview, it’s probably safe to say that the most-referenced properties are Avengers: Age of Ultron (due to the fate of Wanda’s brother Pietro Maximoff) and both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame (due to the fate of Vision and the actions of Thanos).
However, Episode 5 made reference to Captain Marvel. As we discovered in the previous episode, the existence of Captain Monica Rambeau is a reference to the movie itself but this week’s installment actually made a direct reference to the hero herself (Brie Larson) as Agent Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis discussed who was more powerful between Earth’s Mightiest Hero and the Scarlet Witch.
The mention of Captain Marvel’s name brought an expression of something between mild anger and intolerance to Monica’s face, suggesting that something happened between the pair that were once pretty close.
What happened between Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau in WandaVision?
The most likely explanation for Monica’s reaction to Captain Marvel’s name is down to the fact that the hero seemingly never returned to earth.

In the 2019 film, Carol Danvers had an incredibly close relationship with Monica’s mother Maria and was considered “Auntie Carol” to the young Monica (who was played by Akira Akbar) in 1995. However, once she left to protect the galaxy, she seemingly never returned until Nick Fury called her following Thanos’ snap in 2018. That would explain why none of the Avengers knew who she was in spite of her existence pre-dating the team.
As Carol was close friends with Maria, it’s likely that Monica is angry about the fact that Captain Marvel didn’t return between 1995 and 2018. However, perhaps she’s angry about the fact that Carol may not have visited Maria before the latter died of cancer between her returns to earth 2018 and 2023. If she didn’t, this could have been down to the fact that she was attempting to deal with the fallout of Thanos’ snap in the universe. Maybe she overlooked catching up with her friend during her return to earth and wasn’t aware of Maria’s illness.
How WandaVision sets up Captain Marvel 2
Monica’s reaction to Carol’s superhero codename suggests there is definitely some underlying animosity there. That animosity, however, won’t go unresolved as we know that WandaVision‘s Teyonah Parris will be reprising her role in Captain Marvel 2 in 2022.
With that in mind, it’s clear that the pair are destined for some kind of reunion, during which Monica’s feelings about Carol will no doubt be addressed.
WandaVision adds a new episode on Disney+ every Friday from midnight.
