What WandaVision’s fifth episode could mean for the MCU’s future
In WandaVision’s fifth episode, a revelation happened that changes the game for what’s to come in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and beyond. Spoilers ahead for WandaVision.
DC has been diving straight into the multiverse on the big screen and all of this could be traced back to the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, which finally crossed over its film and TV continuities in one shocking interaction. Ezra Miller’s Flash interacted with Grant Gustin’s Scarlet Speedster, which single-handedly changed the perception of what was possible with these properties.
Now Marvel has made its first real multiverse move with the ending of WandaVision’s fifth episode, titled “On A Very Special Episode…”, which saw the appearance of Evan Peters’ Quicksilver on the Disney Plus series.
How Quicksilver’s arrival in WandaVision could change the MCU
Bringing in something from the Fox X-Men universe was smart, leaving the MCU an infinite amount of possibilities now in terms of how to integrate the X-Men into this world. And with the Fox properties now in play, they also have a way to address the elephant in the room when it comes to Wanda’s comic book origins.
Wanda Maximoff is an omega-level mutant with Magneto being her father in the comics, but when Disney and Fox were separate entities, mutants were off-limits in the MCU. As a result, her powers (along with Pietro’s) were unlocked by the Mind Stone. Hopefully, now her mutant origins can come in to play, with maybe Magneto being the Luke-level cameo in the finale.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is still a ways off, but with this show opening up the multiverse, it now serves as a direct precursor to the upcoming films. Not only is the Strange sequel exploring the multiverse, but the coveted Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel is expected to as well. There’s also Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania with Kang the Conquerer being involved, who can mess with time and space.
But before all of these crazy upcoming Marvel projects, WandaVision has now laid the groundwork on what to expect in the next phase and beyond. Bringing in elements from Fox’s coveted X-Men film series takes their “Everything is Connected” mantra to a whole new level. While Black Widow, Eternals and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier were all originally supposed to kick off Phase 4 before the pandemic, WandaVision surprisingly acts as a fresh start for a new era that will hopefully experiment even more.
