Ava DuVernay’s Naomi and the live-action Powerpuff Girls reboot were granted pilot orders from The CW.

The CW chairman, according to Deadline, has a strong belief in pilots. This much is clear because both Ava DuVernay’s superhero drama Naomi and a live-action reboot of The Powerpuff Girls were both granted pilot orders by the network known for its Arrowverse properties.

This continues the trend of the network’s association with superheroes but it also signifies a slight shift in a direction other than the Arrowverse.

The CW is expanding its superhero line-up beyond the Arrowverse

Starting with Naomi first, it was reported back in December that Ava DuVernay and former Arrow executive producer Jill Blankenship were developing a series centered on a teenage girl with energy-based abilities.

Noami is set to discover the origins of a supernatural event, which shook her small north-western hometown to its core and the show is based on a solo 2019 DC series by writers Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and artist Jamal Campbell. It will be produced by DuVernay’s ARRAY Filmworks with Paul Garnes and Sarah Bremner.

As for The Powerpuff Girls, the reboot is developed by Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier. It is, of course, based on the Cartoon Network superhero animated series created by Craig McCracken featuring three young girls with superpowers named Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup.

In this iteration, however, the aforesaid trio of superheroes are reimagined as twentysomethings who resent the fact that they lost their childhood to crime-fighting. This leaves the question of whether the young adults will reunite once more in a world in need of them more than ever.

Cody and Regnier are writing the series and will serve as executive producers alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Erika Kennair is credited as producer. The Powerpuff Girls is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Unfortunately, this also comes with bad news as it was recently revealed that the planned Arrowverse spin-offs Green Arrow and the Canaries and Wonder Girl would not be going ahead at the network. A Black Lightning spin-off titled Painkiller – which will be developed in the form of a backdoor pilot during the former show’s final season – is still in development as of writing.
