DC Comics is starting to release more and more properties through HBO Max, with the mystical anti-hero John Constantine reportedly getting another series.

According to The Illuminerdi, DC Comics is planning on giving John Constantine his own live action series on the HBO Max platform. The series is set to be developed by JJ Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot Productions.

This will excite fans of the character, who were disappointed when his last solo TV series was cancelled by NBC after just 13 episodes. This portrayal, famously brought to life by Matt Ryan, is undoubtedly the definitive adaptation of the character, with Ryan reprising his role in the Arrowverse and becoming a main character in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Ryan also portrayed the character in animated form for DC’s Animated Movie Universe, starring in Justice League Dark, Constantine: City of Demons, and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. Keanu Reeves, of course, also portrayed the character in the 2005 live action film adaptation.

Is Matt Ryan playing John Constantine in the HBO Max reboot series?

Matt Ryan or Keanu Reeves will reportedly not be returning to portray the character for this new HBO Max series. According to the report, the series is looking for “a BIPOC actor in their late 20s, similar to a young Riz Ahmed.”

While they may not be specifically after Riz Ahmed (Venom, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), it seems that Warner Bros. and DC Comics want an actor resembling the star for this portrayal of the character.

Is the new Constantine series set in the DCEU?

According to the reports, the HBO Max Constantine show will bring “magic into the franchise on the hero side will hopefully help breathe some new life into the DCEU,” essentially leading us to the belief that the show will join projects such as Peacemaker as HBO Max exclusives that are a part of the DC Extended Universe.

The series will be reportedly written by Guy Bolton, and focus more on the horror aspects of the Constantine character, bringing fresh life into the franchise that will be sure to delight both fans of the character and horror movie fans.

Fans are sure to be disappointed that Matt Ryan’s portrayal of the character will not be getting another run at a solo TV series, however it will be great to see Constantine back in the spotlight once more. Plus, Ryan is fantastic on Legends of Tomorrow.
