Wanda Maximoff isn’t the real villain in WandaVision. She’s actually the hero here.

WandaVision began with little-to-nothing known about the show. All we knew was that Vision was back from the dead. However, as time went on, we discovered a lot about the Disney Plus show.

In a recent episode, we saw video footage of Wanda breaking into a secure facility and stealing Vision’s body. Director Hayward told the S.W.O.R.D. division in charge of fixing the Westview situation that Wanda stole Vision’s body against his final wishes because he didn’t want his body to be turned into a weapon – we know that this is something Vision would ask for. That’s the part that seems weird, however, because Wanda would definitely follow Vision’s final request.

Wanda loves Vision more than life itself. After Quicksilver died in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he was there for her emotionally and later romantically. To the viewers, Wanda is an emotional wreck right now. Grief can make people do irrational things. Add superpowers into this mix and now you have a whole new scenario.

It’s easy to look at this apparent evidence and assume that Wanda is the antagonist in WandaVision. However, let’s look at this another way. What if she’s not the enemy here. What if she’s actually protecting Vision from S.W.O.R.D.?

Are SWORD the villains in WandaVision?

Remember in Avengers: Endgame when Scott Lang said that he didn’t understand how no one knew those S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were Hydra? How he said that he could look at them and just tell they were evil? Well, we have that exact situation here in WandaVision.

The first time we saw Hayward, this writer assumed everyone watching knew that he was up to no good. He has one of those auras about him and everything about Hayward just seemed off. When he started talking down to Jimmy, that was the first sign. Then, he attempted to kill Wanda with a missile. Lastly, kicking Monica, Darcy and Jimmy off of the job confirmed that he was up to no good because, in a situation like this one, you’d assume he’d take all the help he could get. That is, unless their idea of solving the problem isn’t the same as his.

That leaves the question: What was Wanda doing when she stole Vision’s body? Well, in this writer’s humble opinion, she was protecting Vision from S.W.O.R.D. We’ve seen enough from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to know that the government is almost always up to no good. They’re always going to look for ways to protect themselves from beings with powers and, sometimes, they go too far.

Wanda most likely saved Vision from the fate he didn’t want. The government would have used him for parts or reprogrammed him to be their weapon.

Why Wanda is not the villain of WandaVision

The more WandaVision goes on, the more it seems like Wanda is keeping Vision safe and away from everyone else. She didn’t allow Monica to stay after she saw the S.W.O.R.D. pendant – she immediately expelled her from Westview. However, as Monica pointed out, she didn’t kill her. Wanda made sure she wasn’t harmed too much. Moreover, when Hayward attempted to kill her, the Scarlet Witch didn’t retaliate the same way he did. And, as we’ve seen, she’s more than capable of doing so.

None of Wanda’s confirmed actions sound like those of a villain. For all we know, Vision finding out about his past could kill him – at the every least ruin his brain – and that could explain her desire to keep his memory free of his past. Should she be kidnapping and mind-controlling people? Absolutely not. That’s the part that really seems unlike her.

With over half the season finished, more will be revealed as WandaVision goes on. Who knows what’s really going on with Wanda? The easy guess is that she’s the enemy and this will lead to her being the antagonist in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Be that as it may, that seems too simple for an MCU project – especially their debut Disney Plus project.

Whatever happens in the end, we’ll be both satisfied and frustrated. Marvel Studios will give us a plethora of questions and answer them in ways that lead to more queries. It’s what makes us love and detest them all at once.
