The upcoming Flash film is already stacked with Batmen, but now someone from Krypton is set to join the cast of the film as well.

In an exclusive from Deadline, it has been revealed that Sasha Calle has been cast as Supergirl in The Flash. Calle has previously been nominated for a Daytime Emmy for her role on The Young and the Restless.

Taking over a role most famously portrayed by Melissa Benoist in the Arrowverse, Calle will also be the first Latina Supergirl. She was reportedly one of over 425 actresses to audition for the role, all of whom Andy Muschietti, director of The Flash, watched the auditions for. Reportedly he, DC head Walter Hamada, and others were blown away by her simultaneous toughness and vulnerability.

As of right now, it’s unclear what version of Supergirl that Calle is playing, as there have been multiple different iterations over the years, but it can be presumed that she is playing Kara Zor-El. Even if she doesn’t even up being Kara, and is either Matrix, Linda Danvers, or Cir-El, Calle will be the fourth person to portray Supergirl in live-action. Helen Slater played the title character in the reviled 1984 Supergirl film. Later, Laura Vandervoort played her in Smallville. And most recently, Melissa Benoist has played her on Supergirl, which has run for five seasons, with its sixth and final season set to air soon.

With the addition of Supergirl, The Flash really looks like it is set to now open up the DC film universe(s) in a big way. If they are adding and announcing Supergirl with filming set to begin soon on the DCEU movie, that probably means that other big name characters might be being played close to the vest by the crew and Warner Bros.

It’s been hard to get excited for this film given it’s many delays, director and writer changes, and other drama surrounding it, but this Supergirl news should make almost everyone excited about it.

The Flash hits theaters on November 4, 2022 and stars Ezra Miller in the titular role.
