WandaVision: What’s hidden in plain sight in episode 7
By Mike McNulty
Agatha’s mysterious book
As Wanda made her way into Agatha’s secret and sinister basement, the camera focused tight on a strange book with wisps of glowing energy streaming from between its pages. Clearly, this was a blatant cinematic cue to show the audience that this book is very important. But although the book is clearly magical, why is it so important?
The natural response to seeing that book, especially if you’re knowledgeable about all things Marvel, is that it must be the Darkhold. Which would make sense as it’s a grimoire that can tap into other dimensions and make whatever one wishes for come true. The problem is that the Darkhold already appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Runaways, and it didn’t look anything like the book we see in this episode. It also can’t be the Book of Cagliostro as that, too, looked different as seen in Doctor Strange (2016).
One intriguing possibility is that the book could be the Book of the Vishanti, which, in the comics, is the spellbook used by Doctor Strange (played in the MCU by Benedict Cumberbatch). Let’s not forget that Strange was one of the people Thanos snapped out of existence in the MCU and has been gone for five years. That’s plenty of time for Agatha to steal the book for herself – if this book does, indeed, belong to Strange. What’s interesting is that the Book of the Vishanti has spells for creating magical barriers and dimensional travel, which would be perfect for creating and maintaining the Hex.
Also of note is that a book of magic played a key role in the Vision and the Scarlet Witch comic book series. In the story, Captain America gave Wanda the book to translate as it was written in Celtic. Unbeknownst to them, however, it contained a being named Samhain, who, in Celtic traditions, is the Spirit of Halloween. It certainly fits with the devil imagery and allusions that have been made throughout the show, and Agatha’s basement really looks like something right out of very early Medieval England. And, come to think of it, in the comics is depicted dressed in blue… the same color Evan Peter’s Pietro wears.
But I suppose we’ll have to wait and see how all of this does connect, if at all. There are only two episodes left, so WandaVision should be able fit all these disparate clues together. But at the very least, we may be seeing how this series will act as the prologue for many upcoming films and shows in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
