Black Panther hit people in ways we hadn’t seen in a comic book movie before and possibly after. It wasn’t the action that made this movie a big success. There were a lot of quotes throughout the movie that left people feeling all kinds of emotions. More than a few of them came from the movie’s antagonist Erik Killmonger.
It didn’t take long for people to love Killmonger. The first time we see him, he’s in a museum explaining where the artifacts really came from and why him stealing them is essentially giving them back to their owners. From then on, the people watching loved him. He wasn’t the typical villain out for domination. He was an intelligent antagonist with a need to set things right. His methods may have been extreme, but his message could be looked at as just.
When Black Panther defeated Killmonger, T’Challa offered to save him. Killmonger refused. He gave the audience a line that will never be forgotten. “Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors that jumped from the ships because they knew death was better than bondage.” When was the last time you heard something so deep and profound from a villain? Thanos had his moments, but not like this. No matter how you feel about him, that line will never be forgotten.
