One of the most iconic phrases in Marvel Comics is, “Avengers Assemble!” All of the best members of the Avengers have said it. A call to arms. It lets the people in earshot know that Earth’s Mightiest heroes are on the scene. It gives civilians a sense of security and puts fear in the hearts of their enemies. It’s a battle cry that’s especially recognizable when Steve Rogers says it.
We’ve seen pictures of Steve Rogers with his shield in the air yelling those two words. For that reason, people were waiting for years to hear him say it in a Marvel Studios project. He teased it at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron. When the movie cut off right as Chris Evans said, “Avengers” the entire theater groaned and laughed. It’s part of what made his Avengers: Endgame moment special.
The stage was set flawlessly. Heroes from all of the universe came together. Thanos’ confident grin turned into worry. Everyone lined up. They were angry and ready for revenge. There were no more individual teams. They were one unit. Captain America yelled out “Avengers” and paused. Mjolnir came to him, and with anger and preparedness Cap said, “Assemble.” Thor yelled and it was time for action. On that day, at that moment, they were all Avengers. Not just protectors of their own worlds. They were the Universe’s Mightiest Heroes.
