The CW has given Superman and Lois a surprisingly early season 2 renewal, but when you think about it, it’s not really that surprising at all.

Superman and Lois gave Arrowverse fans a completely new type of show. The Supergirl spin-off featured stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprising their respective roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane in a completely different environment to the ones we had seen them in before.

The show clearly resonated with fans as it has been revealed that The CW has renewed Superman and Lois for a second season after just one episode, making it one of the fastest freshman renewals in the network’s history.

Why Superman and Lois was renewed for season 2

It’s really no surprise that Superman and Lois was renewed for a second season. The show premiered to highly impressive viewing figures, bringing in an impressive 1.7 million viewers on the night, marking a high in that timeslot for the first time in over two years. The CW’s Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz praised the show and the people responsible for that success, commenting:

"“The phenomenal multiplatform debut of Superman & Lois, which delivered for us in a big way on both a linear and streaming basis, is a testament to the creativity, hard work and dedication of the talented people who worked tirelessly in front of and behind the camera, especially in this challenging environment.”"

Granted the show’s ratings were lower than previous Arrowverse premieres but that’s simply down to the fact that less people tune into TV on the night as broadcast ratings in general are down significantly. 1.7 million viewers is a huge win for The CW and, Walker aside, it’s the most-watched scripted broadcast on the network in a very long time.

Superman & Lois also received acclaim from fans and critics, many of whom cited its mature storytelling, cinematic presentation and strong performances from its core cast as the show’s greatest assets.

It’s safe to say that fans are appreciating these new stories in the world of Superman and Lois Lane. With that in mind, it’s great to hear that the show will be around for another year.

Superman & Lois airs on The CW every Tuesday night at 9:00 p.m. ET.
