Is Wanda Maximoff appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home? Is Spider-Man appearing in WandaVision? Is the multiverse drawing nearer in the MCU?
While doing press for his upcoming film Cherry, Tom Holland took a moment to praise his fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe family members Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany and their limited series WandaVision. This isn’t the first time the two properties have been interlinked as it’s long-been rumored that the now-titled Spider-Man: No Way Home is connected to the Disney Plus series and perhaps even Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Hard at work on the long-awaited Spider-Man 3, Holland told Collider that he is “obsessed” with the series, adding that “it’s honestly my favorite Marvel thing I’ve ever seen.” However, later on in that same interview, Holland jokingly suggests that he might have a cameo in the show. After all, actor Paul Bettany did reveal to Esquire that there is another cameo from an actor who he has “longed to work” with.
And while we all remember how much Tom Holland loves his spoilers, he’s been pretty tight-lipped about this upcoming Spider-Man film…until recently. The studio has announced that Spider-Man: No Way Home is the third installment title for the franchise; causing fans to speculate whether or not the multiverse is going to find itself in the movie plot with a title like that.
What We Know about Spider-Man: No Way Home and the multiverse
What we do know is Benedict Cumberbatch will be reprising his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, according to The Hollywood Reporter – which just so happens to be before Doctor Strange’s sequel is released in 2022.
Another huge factor to take into account is the fact that Elizabeth Olsen has a prominent role in Doctor Strange: in the Multiverse of Madness. To assume Tom Holland might show up in WandaVision, even in the mid-credit scene might not be too far out of reach.
Multiverse Saga Enters Center Stage
We all know Marvel never does things for giggles because everything has a meaning to the overarching plot. And after watching WandaVision for eight weeks, it’s safe to say we’re on the verge of a breakthrough with Phase 4.
Now, there have been rumors suggesting that Marvel Studios was potentially bringing multi-verse to the MCU ever since Into the Spider-verse was released in 2018. Just last year, Disney has confirmed via Twitter that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ties to WandaVision and Spider-Man: No Way Home in some way.
When asked about the writing process and tying storylines to the upcoming Spider-Man and Doctor Strange films, WandaVision show head writer Jac Schaeffer revealed to ComicBook.com that other film creatives know exactly what they need to know to tie the films together in the right way. So would a cameo from either of the actors be too far out of reach to tie the series and films together?
Coincidences
But how could they cross paths? Let’s look at the coincidences.
If you take a close look at the end of the announcement video from Sony, you’ll notice the hexagons around the whiteboard. Hexagons have been a prominent factor in WandaVision, given that Westview is literally inside what S.W.O.R.D. and the FBI has coined as The Hex. In the comics, Wanda’s powers are hex powers. The Hex has been shown in movies across the MCU from Guardians of the Galaxy, and even Far From Home. So there could be a possibility that there is a link.
Another coincidence is the Multiverse. Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse showed viewers that there is a world of other Spideys out there, and with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it is hard to believe there won’t be some correlation between the three projects.
There has been so much talk around the Multiverse and how prominent its role will be in Phase 4, that it’s hard not to believe its importance in the upcoming projects. And based on Marvel’s reputation of tying things together, I think it’s safe to say Phase 4 is in good hands.
You can catch WandaVision on Fridays at 12 a.m. PT and 3:00 a.m. ET on Disney+. Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters this Christmas.
