WandaVision evolved Darcy Lewis and Jimmy Woo like the MCU films never could
By Mark Lynch
WandaVision gave Darcy Lewis and Jimmy Woo character upgrades in a big way.
WandaVision is over. The Disney Plus series ran for nine incredible episodes and it showcased why TV shows are the way of the future when it comes to adapting comic book characters and stories.
Part of the reason for that is the fact that there’s more time to develop the characters involved in the story. In a two-hour movie, there isn’t going to be enough time to share equally with everyone. As a result, some characters end up feeling like they aren’t developed to the full extent of what they should be capable of.
Let’s take Doctor Darcy Lewis and Agent Jimmy Woo. In Thor and Thor: The Dark World, Darcy was a supporting character that didn’t contribute that much to the plot (when she really could have) and was, instead, relegated to making random jokes. She just wasn’t taken seriously at all in spite of her clear potential. Jimmy Woo was the same. Nothing about him in Ant-Man and the Wasp suggested that he had depth under that humor. Thankfully, all of that changed in WandaVision.
WandaVision allowed Darcy Lewis and Jimmy Woo to shine
The first time we see Agent Jimmy Woo in WandaVision, he does a magic trick Scott Lang taught him. A nice nod to Ant-Man and the Wasp, it was a goofy way to reintroduce him that really worked. The difference is that as soon as the trick was over, he got right into business.
With Darcy, she starts her return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe analyzing the people riding with her. Sure, she did it in a fun way, but her intelligence was on display from her very first apperance on the show. Yes, we saw that she’s still the same Darcy Lewis at heart, but she’s also not an idiot. And throughout the show, we see more of this from both characters.
Here are the facts about both Darcy and Agent Woo. Without them, things would have gone a completely different way. They were both crucial in helping Monica Rambeau solve the mystery of the Westview anomaly. Darcy was the one who discovered the secret of the Hex while Agent Woo did a lot of clandestine things to get Monica back into Wanda’s alternate reality. Moreover, he and Darcy were pivotal in getting Director Hayward arrested in the end as it was Darcy who trapped him so that he couldn’t escape and Agent Woo brought in the FBI to arrest him.
We all loved Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda, Kathryn Hahn as Agatha, and Paul Bettany as Vision. However, Randall Park (Jimmy Woo) and Kat Dennings (Darcy Lewis) will be looked at as the unsung heroes of WandaVision. Maybe even the fan-favorites.
The roles that Jimmy and Darcy they played didn’t stop at what they did to help. They both stood out as the amazing characters that they are as well and it was fantastic seeing them evolve – so much so that fans are calling to return in a new Marvel Studios show.
The audience doesn’t want them as side characters anymore. They want them in the starring roles they deserve. Realistically, who wouldn’t want to see that? Darcy and Agent Woo going all over the world solving super crime would be a fun concept. They would bring all of the entertainment and seriousness that makes for a fun mystery or crime show (make it so, Disney Plus). We know Park and Dennings both have what it takes to carry a show. Each of them have shows they starred in that lasted five or more years – Kat Dennings with 2 Broke Girls and Randall Park with Fresh off the Boat.
This won’t be the last we see of Agent Jimmy Woo and Doctor Darcy Lewis. Let’s be honest, after seeing how popular as they were in WandaVision, it would be a huge missed opportunity if they weren’t brought back. Who knows, maybe we’ll see them sooner than we think. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Loki, and Thor: Love and Thunder are all projects where they could appear. Whenever it happens, this writer can’t wait to see them again.
All episodes of WandaVision are now available on Disney+.
