Venom Let There Be Carnage delayed again: When is it released?
Venom: Let There Be Carnage has unfortunately been delayed again.
Hollywood has faced a lot of challenges throughout the past year due to the coronavirus pandemic. A considerable number of films have seen multiple delays in a seemingly never-ending pursuit to land on dates that are far enough removed from the pandemic to have audiences safely back in theaters.
One of those films is Venom: Let There Be Carnage. The movie was originally scheduled to arrive on October 2, 2020, before it was ultimately moved to June 2021.
Now, the movie has been delayed once more. Fortunately, however, we won’t have to wait much longer to get the vengeful goo and his lobster-eating companion (we are referring to Eddie Brock, for those unfamiliar with 2018’s Venom) back on the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Venom: Let There Be Carnage has been moved to September 17, 2021.
Why has Venom: Let There Be Carnage been delayed?
There appear to be two main reasons behind this delay. Firstly, there’s the fact that earlier this March, Universal moved F9 (Fast and Furious 9) to Let There Be Carnage‘s original June 25th release date. Given the box-office juggernaut that the Fast and Furious franchise is, Sony likely decided to move Let There Be Carnage away from that date to minimize the probability of Eddie Brock’s latest adventure underperforming financially (especially given how it’s still unclear how slowly box office earnings will recover post-pandemic).
The other reason behind the delay has to do with post-production. Per THR, the delay will provide some extra time for the film’s post-production process. This is no reason to panic, though. While the report didn’t specify the kind of work left to be completed for the film, the fact that some extra post-production time is needed doesn’t necessarily mean that Let There Be Carnage is in need of some serious work behind the scenes. The post-production work mentioned by THR could be (and likely is, given the relatively short three-month delay) some simple editing or sound mixing.
Another delay for the Spider-Verse
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is not the only one of Sony’s Spidey-related projects to have faced delays recently. Back in January of this year, Morbius was moved from its March 18, 2021 release date to October of that same year. A few days later, the film was delayed once again, this time to January 21, 2022.
Even though these delays may be frustrating for fans, Sony’s decision to postpone Morbius and Let There Be Carnage is completely justified. As mentioned, the pandemic-related closure of movie theaters around the world has left the movie-theater business in a state of uncertainty. With Spider-Man and Venom being two of Sony’s biggest box office performers, it’s only natural for the studio to delay its films as many times as it sees fit until it’s, firstly, finally safe for people to return to theaters, and secondly, until audiences feel comfortable enough to return.
For now (pending another delay), Venom will be swinging back into theaters on September 17, 2021. The Spider-Verse will then continue with Spider-Man: No Way Home, scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2021
