The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s premiere episode ended on quite the shocking note.

The grandeur of WandaVision is still fresh in our minds as the beloved Disney Plus show bowed out with a memorable series finale episode just two weeks ago. Now, here we are in the aftermath of that show and all that it means for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans have begun a new journey in that same universe.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier presented viewers with a product that was very different to WandaVision but recognizable to the MCU fans among us nonetheless. While the first of Marvel Studios’ streaming show took the universe into the nearly uncharted territory of magic, the second grounds it with a thriller not unlike some of the previous Captain America movies.

What happened in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 1?

The premiere episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier saw Sam Wilson surrender the shield that Captain America left with him (in the hopes that the Falcon would carry on his legacy), suggesting that nobody was worthy to carry that shield – or the legacy that came with it – other than Steve Rogers himself.

However, while he thought the shield would be put on display in The Captain America Exhibit (which it temporarily was), he was left heartbroken to discover that the government had assigned the Captain America mantle to a new hero in the closing moments of the episode.

Who is the new Captain America and what does the ending of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 1 mean?

The new Captain America is John F. Walker. Portrayed by Wyatt Russell, he is known as U.S. Agent in the Marvel Comics and is the U.S. government’s replacement for Steve Rogers as Captain America.

This will undoubtedly cause some major conflict within (and perhaps between) both Sam and Bucky as the pair will no doubt wonder if this replacement is worthy of carrying that shield.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier adds a new episode on Disney+ every Friday from midnight.
