Riverdale season 5 returned for a new installment that left fans in awe, but what does it all mean for the show? Are Betty and Jughead really getting back together?

Riverdale is familiar with the art of shocking its audience. It thrives on that and, by its very design, is built to shock. And even though not all of those shocks work in hindsight, it has ensured that we have been talking about it non-stop for the past four years.

The CW TV series returned with its second-to-last episode before its midseason hiatus and it was an installment that definitely had people talking. Of the many things to take place in the episode, it was Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones turning back the clock to venture out on an investigative adventure that really got people’s attention. Of course, it left them wondering if this is the beginning of that long-awaited Bughead reunion?

Are Betty and Jughead getting back together on Riverdale season 5?

Riverdale hasn’t been the same without Betty and Jughead solving crimes and catching bad guys like the Jessica Fletcher/Nancy Drew duo that they are. The pair have barely interacted since both of them returned to town to help Archie Andrews bring it back from the brink of destruction. And yet, fans still know that they are destined to find their way back to each other.

That was a journey they made the first step on in this week’s installment as Jughead offered to help Betty with her investigation into what happened to Polly. Betty would later return the favor by helping Jughead track down Lerman Logan after he ventured out onto the “Lonely Highway”.

Naturally, seeing these two reunite in these circumstances has fans wondering if they are on the path back to each other – especially since Betty was recently romantically-involved with Archie and Jughead appears to be destined for romance with Tabitha. And even though Jughead’s romance with Tabitha does indeed still appear to be on the table in next week’s installment, that doesn’t change the fact that Bughead will reunite in the future.

It’s worth noting that Betty only opened up to Jughead about what she fears really happened to Polly. Likewise, Jughead returned that trust by calling her first when he needed help finding Lerman – something he might not have done had they not grown closer in this week’s episode.

Betty and Jughead are finally back in each other’s lives now. They have overcome the awkward lack of interaction between them and have settled into a groove more like the one they once had. While they will no doubt still need to actually address what happened (in the same way that Archie and Veronica did),  the fact that they have agreed to move forward with the investigation as if it were their teenage years all over again does bode well for Bughead. And they will move forward, right past the obstacles and heartbreak (and aliens) as they find their way back to each other.

Bughead will return. It might not be today, tomorrow or, heck, even this season. But Bughead will blossom once more.
