Supergirl season 6 premiered with an unforgettable episode that left fans with a LOT of questions. But what does it all mean for the show’s final season?

The season 6 premiere of Supergirl made quite the impact. The first episode of the Arrowverse series to hit screens since its impromptu finale aired back in May, it was undoubtedly a memorable offering that set up the final season well.

Lex Luthor’s maniacal schemes reached new lows as the Man of Steel’s notorious archenemy set his sights on the Girl of Steel and planned to eradicate her – before turning his attention to all aliens – so that the world would be free from her protection.

A battle between Kara and the villain ensued in the Fortress of Solitude with the fate of the world – and indeed the multiverse – on the line.

“Rebirth” was a memorable episode, no doubt, but it also ended on a note that was truly unforgettable.

What does the ending of Supergirl season 6, episode 1 really mean?

Supergirl season 6, episode 1, titled “Rebirth”, saw the Super Friends battle Lex Luthor in the Fortress of Solitude as they tried to make him mortal again. However, while they were ultimately successful, he was able to use a Phantom Zone projector to propel Kara into the Phantom Zone as everyone helplessly watched.

The Super Friends then decided that, while they looked for Kara, they would step up to keep National City safe from any evildoers that dared to threaten it. With that, Alex was gifted a new superhero codename as Agent Danvers became Sentinel.

The episode’s conclusion then reminded audiences of the painful truth that Kara was, indeed, trapped in the terrifying Phantom Zone with evil ghouls set to make her life a living hell. Next week’s installment will explore that further as the Girl of Steel engages in a battle of might – and, perhaps more importantly, a battle of the minds – with the deadly creatures in a bid to overcome the horrifying dimension she is trapped in.

This indicates that Kara will be out of action for a while and it seems to be a clever plot device to keep the character off-screen for as long as possible. The reason for this is the fact that Melissa Benoist understandably returned to filming a little later than the rest of her castmates so the creative team needed to write around her absence. Whether that means we’ll have one Phantom Zone-heavy episode or a lot of Phantom Zone-light episodes remains to be seen, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Kara is stuck there for a little longer than any of us would like her to be.
