9. The final competitors of the Phoenix tournament

Comic book: Avengers No. 43

What better way to begin than with Wolverine fighting the Black Panther? It’s a fight that was teased in the end of the previous Avengers and we weren’t let down either. The two incredible fighters lived up to their reputation. In the end, it was T’Challa who came out victorious. She-Hulk, Shanna the She-Devil, Captain America, the Red Widow, and Namor are the only fighters remaining. The last page shows the next fight we’ll be waiting to see. It will be T’Challa versus Captain America.

Why is this important?

Whoever wins this fight determines who the Phoenix will possess. Black Panther and Steve Rogers don’t want the power, while Namor is obsessed with it. In the middle you have She-Hulk who doesn’t want it, but definitely wants to keep Namor from having it. And who knows what the Red Widow will do with it.

In the end, it’ll probably be Shanna the She-Devil. She’s the one who doesn’t have any major ties to any current Marvel Comics story. Plus, a boost in her character couldn’t hurt. She-Hulk, Captain America, or Black Panther winning could ruin the Avengers run. Namor is unlikely, but possible. He could get the power and then refuse it. Red Widow is also a huge part of the future of the Avengers. So she’s out as well. Like the previous section, we’ll have to wait and see how correct this writer is.
