With Zack Snyder’s Justice League now released, the filmmaker known for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman has Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns on his wish-list.

Fresh off the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the filmmaker behind Watchmen and Man of Steel has revealed that he would like to to adapt one of Batman’s most influential storylines to the screen. That story is none other than Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

Released in 1986, The Dark Knight Returns is set during an alternate future in Gotham City where Bruce Wayne, now middle-aged, has retired from the mantle of Batman. Carrie Kelly then undertakes the mantle of Robin in an attempt to stave off the vicious gang known as the Mutants and alleviate the rate of crime and corruption in Gotham City – something that plays a part in bringing Batman out of retirement.

Will Zack Snyder direct Batman: The Dark Knight Returns in the DCEU?

In an interview with UNILAD (H/T: LADBible), Zack and his wife Deborah Snyder discussed their film catalogue under the DCEU, including the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Snyder was then asked if there was any superhero project he wanted to work on. He responded:

"“You know there’s been a couple that we’ve talked about. But you know, I feel pretty… I mean Frank Miller’s Elektra Lives Again is a cool book that I think is amazing.”“I’ve always wanted to do a real, super faithful adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns. Other than that, I’m kind of happy where we are with our cinematic [output].”"

Last year, the director expressed interest in adapting a live-action version of The Dark Knight Returns and even believed it could still be a possibility. However, after the release of “The Snyder Cut” of Justice League, WarnerMedia implied that it would be moving on from Snyder’s DCEU (a.k.a. the Snyderverse).

Despite this, Batman v Superman drew heavy inspiration from the graphic novel including but not limited to a veteran Bruce who is still operating as the bat-themed vigilante, an armored suit utilized to face Superman and the lingering presence of a deceased Robin.
