Sharon Carter

As for Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), it seems that the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent turned CIA operative got a pretty raw deal when it came to dealing out pardons. The moment she steps back on U.S. soil, she’ll get arrested for the crime of aiding Steve, Sam, and Bucky during Captain America: Civil War (2016). Ironically, all three of the fugitives she helped have been pardoned but she has not. Sharon claims that she didn’t have Sam or Bucky’s “Avengers friends” to help her out.

But considering she’s the grandniece of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s cofounder, Peggy Carter, and knows the ins and out of intelligence networks, this doesn’t quite wash. Unless, of course, her becoming an art smuggler in Madripoor is all part of an elaborate cover story, probably to uncover the Power Broker’s true identity. That could be the reason why she told her aide that they had a “problem” regarding Sam, Bucky, and Zemo getting involved.

It also wouldn’t be the first time Sharon went deep undercover, either, as far as the comics are concerned. In order to infiltrate the Red Skull’s organization, she took even more drastic measures by faking her own death and adopting a new identity in the process. It ended up working so well that even S.H.I.E.L.D. believed that Sharon died. And since she believed she had been abandoned by her own country, she wound up joining the bad guys until Steve found her. So, perhaps, there’s a touch of that storyline that’s been adapted for the series.

But whether Sharon has decided to go down a darker path out of disillusionment, or whether she’s still with the CIA, there’s definitely more to her story than she’s letting on. Perhaps Sharon herself might be the Power Broker. After all, there’s nothing to suggest the Broker isn’t a woman. We’ll have to see in the next three episodes whether this will pan out or not.
