The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 4 ending explained: What has [SPOILER] done and what does it mean?
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s fourth episode left mouths ajar but what does it mean for the remaining episodes of the show?
It’s no secret that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the most talked-about TV show in the world right now. The second Marvel Studios series to hold that title after WandaVision, the Disney Plus original has carried on the overarching story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by placing the focus solely on its titular characters and the new mission they find themselves investigating.
It also introduced a brand new Captain America, John Walker, who was handpicked by the US government to carry on the legacy of the original Cap Steve Rogers. That character has been an intentionally divisive one as the show has continued to tell us that Steve was one of a kind.
While we’re certainly seeing someone come forward who is worthy of Steve’s legacy, that person is not John Walker. And the fourth episode made that clearer than ever.
What happened in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 4?
The fourth episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier saw Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes and Helmut Zemo successfully manage to track down the Flag-Smashers. Though Sam managed to reason with Karli Morgantheau, the arrival of John Walker and Lemar Hoskins threw a wrench in his plans and literally made everything so much worse.
In the end, a second battle ensued – one that saw Hoskins killed by Karli after one punch used too much force. This resulted in Walker – who had now taken the super soldier serum – violently attacking one of the Flag-Smashers, killing him out in the open with Steve’s shield, with the surrounding area – and, by extension, the whole world – watching him.
What does the ending of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 4 mean?
One of the purposes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the idea that few were worthy enough to carry on Steve Rogers’ legacy. With that in mind, fans automatically hated Walker because he wasn’t the man Steve chose (and he wasn’t Bucky either) and those who read the comic books knew that US Agent wasn’t the most beloved character. But Wyatt Russell played the character to perfection, highlighting that there was just a man beneath all of that trying to do his best in a world that was becoming increasingly stranger.

The ending of “The Whole World Is Watching” highlights that there is no coming back for John Walker. He may have taken the super soldier serum to be more like Steve Rogers but he has only highlighted that he’s nothing like the beloved Captain America.
Of course he’s hurting after having Lemar so cruelly taken from him, but his decision to take a life – and to do so in such a brutal fashion in front of the whole world – has desecrated the legacy that he swore to protect. And, whether he becomes US Agent or not, John Walker is not Captain America.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier adds a new episode on Disney+ every Friday from 12:00 a.m. PT and 3:00 a.m. ET.
